Welcome to The Scion tC.com
The Ultimate Stop for The Scion tC owner and Enthusiast
1. where can i find the official scion faq?
http://www.scion.com/contact/about/faq/ - scion has a great faq of their own. you can find answers to many of your general "scion" questions there. if you don't see something answered on this site regarding the tC, then you can probably find it there. if your question isn't found here, in your manual or on the official scion faq page, let me know!2. where can i find the features, specs, accessories, pricing and warranty information on the tC?
http://www.scion.com/showroom/tc/gallery/index.html - if you're looking for the current features, specs, accessories, pricing and warranty information on the tC, then go to this link. this faq wasn't made to answer redundant/general questions that you can find on the manufacturer's website.3. where can i find official press release information for the tC?
http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_library/display.html?kw=scion+tc - you can find some *great* information here. there are many documents including the official 2005 tC tech handout that tells you pretty much everything you need to know on the tC and what it's all about.4. what does "tC" stand for?
touring coupe.5. what are the differences/changes made between the '05 and '06 tC models?
official!: http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_library/display_release.html?id=20050525b
the diferences/changes made for the 2006 tC is as follows: 1) steering wheel audio controls, 2) new audio head unit design (shared across all scion platforms for the 2006 model year), 3) ipod/mini-jack connectors (inside center console), 4) two new exterior colors (see here) and 5) 25% of all tC's will be built with the side curtain air-bags until demand increases. also, there will be a price *increase* on the base price on the tC of $200, bringing the base price up to $16,200 manual/$17,000 automatic.6. what are the crash test ratings for the tC?
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/3176.html - for a frontal crash, the nhtsa gave the tC a 5-star rating for the driver side and a 4-star rating for the passenger side. in a side crash, the nhtsa gave both driver and passenger sides a 4-star rating and that test was done without the side curtain air bags.7. when will the 2006 tC be released?
now! the 2006 model year tC is arriving at dealerships near you! california is seeing them first followed by the east coast (i'm on the east coast and they start arriving this week!) for you mid-westerners, expect a few more weeks before you start seeing them, but if any dealers tell you longer than july, go to a different dealer because they are lying! for discussion regarding the '06, this thread has many links (thanks kaeon!): http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=620228. where can i go to see my local dealer's current inventory and allocation of the tC?
to see the current inventory and the allocation for a specific dealer near you, follow these steps:
*note*this will only work if your dealer falls within the southeast toyota region. this includes the following states: florida, georgia, alabama, south carolina and north carolina. i have tested this and it appears to only work for this region. if you find this works for your region and you are outside of these states, please let me know and what zip code you are using. step 1go to http://www.buyatoyota.com/ and enter in your zip code. step 2the next screen will dislpay a list of your local dealers. click on the dealer name of your choice. step 3the following screen will show you the different toyota models and how many are avialable for the southeast region. choose the scion tC.
step 4the next screen will show you the model year car and the transmission. choose the year and transmission option you would like and click "go to next step." step 5here, you can choose your color and options if you'd like, but if you'd like to see all the avaiable cars of the model year with the transmission option you chose, just keep selecting to "skip step." once you have selected your option(s) (or not), you will see an option that says "view inventory" and click on that. step 6this screen shows the inventory of the dealer you selected with the options you selected. it shows here if they have a particular model in stock (immediately available) or it will give you the eta on when the car is due into the dealer. you can click on the link of the car here and you can get a vin number that you can use to place your order with the dealer. step 7if you'd like to see the inventory of a different dealer, simply choose a different dealer at step 2 and follow through the steps once again. 9. my tC has a rattle noise and a throttle delay and i like to complain alot. what should i do?
so you hear a rattling sound coming from your trunk and your car is slow coming off the line. instead of complaining, you should do something about it! follow these easy steps and you will be successful in you life too!: first, you should move to canada. then, jump on an internet cafe up there somewhere and visit ack154's "common tC issues and various fixes" thread with links to thousands and thousands of posts that will help you with your so-called complaints! *ahem* anyways, great job to ack154 for learning how to use the search button! and how did he become a mod?! the world may never know... ;^) http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8914910. where can i find the recall information regarding the tC's sun roof?
the tC has its first voluntary recall! yay! (and no, it's not for the hatch rattle!) apparantly, if you have your sun roof open and if a rock hits your wind deflector, the deflector could shatter, showering you with glass! i know, it sounds fun! however, scion wishes you a safe driving experience, thus the recall. and it's not much of a recall. all they are doing is putting some laminate on the wind deflector. some will receive a mailing which details it all with instructions on how to get the recall performed or you can call your local dealer and provide them with your vin number. you can find full recall information at the following link and search for nhtsa campaign id # 05V483000: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm; the toyota recall # is 50S. 2005 through early 2006 models are effected. the part number for the laminate is 63847-21020. thanks to SNOOP97DAWG's thread for the part #.11. what is the limited edition jada toys scion tC all about and how do i get one?
for scion's recall for the sun roof (see the question above), scion has teamed up with jada toys to provide those who have completed the recall with a limited edition sciont tC, 1:24 scale die-cast toy (pic). you should expect to receive the toy car in the mail 10-12 weeks after you performed the recall along with a thank you note from scion. if you have performed your recall, and *only* received the thank you note and did not receive the car, you are still eligible to receive it. contact scion @ 800-843-1502 and provide them with your information.12. what are the list of enhancements and specs for the scion tC release series 1.0 (rs 1.0)?

supposedly scion is proposing a 'tuner' tC, which really is more of a basic tC to save the buyer $$$ and allow them to add whatever options and 'tune' the car they way they want. this of course hasn't been finalized yet, but rumors say that 400-500 would be built and be available in june/july '06 in a limited number of colors and cost around $1,500 less. differences between the production tC and 'tuner concept tC' are listed below. pic here:

2. what is the alternator output on the tC?
1200 watts.3. do the oem fog lights turn on with the parking/driving lights?
no, the oem fog lights will only turn on with the the light combination switch in the headlight position and only with dimmer switch on low beams. if you'd like to have the oem fog lights turn on with the parking/driving lights, please see this question.4. do the low beams/fog lights turn off when i turn on the high beams?
when you switch to the high beams or flash the high beams, the low beams remain on, however, the fog lights turn off when using the high beams.5. how do i make my tC oem fog lights turn on with the parking/driving lights?
yay! finally did this. see my post here for instructions: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=881960#8819606. how do i enable/disable the seatbelt reminder buzzer noise using the trip meter button?
to enable/disable that annoying seatbelt reminder buzzer, follow these steps using the trip meter button, but make sure you still buckle up!:
step 1turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'ODO' is displayed. step 2turn the key off. turn the key back to the 'on' position. within six seconds of doing so, press and hold the trip meter button for ten seconds. after ten seconds, buckle the driver's side seatbelt. step 3the buzzer by default is set to on. once you've held the trip meter button for ten seconds and then buckled the driver's side seatbelt, the lcd will then disply 'b-OFF', telling you that the buzzer is now turned off. you can now let go of the trip meter button. if pressed again in this mode, you will set the buzzer back to on, 'b-ON'. *note*if the battery or combination meter is disconnected, you will have to follow the procedure again. 7. how do i reset and/or specify the interval for the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button?
the tC's ecu (computer) memorizes the distance your car has traveled. scion recommends that you change your oil every 5,000 miles. when your car exceeds 4,500 miles, the ecu will flash the maintenance required light for 12 seconds after turning the key to 'on'. if it exceeds 5,000 miles, then the ecu keeps the maintenance required light on until it is reset. so, how do you reset it? follow these steps (this procedure is also listed in the tC owner's manual, pg. 96):
step 1turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'ODO' is displayed. step 2turn the key off. now, push and hold the trip meter button. while holding the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on'. step 3while you continue to hold the trip meter button, you will see on the lcd disply five (5) small dashes and they will begin to 'count down' rather quickly.
step 4continue holding the trip meter button and once all the dashes have been cleared, your lcd will display six zeros (000000) - release the trip meter button now - and then the lcd will display 'ODO' and your current mileage. at this time, your 'maintenance required'/oil change light has been reset. *note*each dash represents 1,000 miles. if you like to change your oil every 3,000 miles for example, release the trip meter button when only two (2) dashes remain. that way, you will get the reminder light at the next 3,000 mile mark instead of 5,000. 8. how do i clear the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button?
if at the time you changed your oil, you or the person changing your oil did not reset the 'maintanence reqiured'/oil change light or if you would just rather turn it off instead of setting the interval (aka- the lazy way to turn off that annoying light), follow these steps:
step 1turn the key to the 'on' position. step 2reset both trip meters to zero. you can reset the trip meters to zero by selecting trip a or trip b and holding in the trip meter button for five (5) seconds. step 3after both trip meters are reset, select any trip meter and hold in the trip meter button and start the car.
step 4continue holding the trip meter button until the "maintenance required' light disappears. 9. how do i enable/disable the 'needle jump' when starting the car using the trip meter button?
if you don't like the cool 'needle jump' feature when you first start your car, then you're a retard... er, i mean, if you would like to disable this annoying feature or if you turned it off by accident when NOT following the directions on the other trip meter easter eggs, then follow these steps (similar steps as seatbelt reminder buzzer, but you start with the lcd on 'trip a' or 'trip b', NOT 'ODO':
step 1turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'trip a' or 'trip b' is displayed on the lcd, NOT 'ODO'. step 2turn the key off. now, push and hold the trip meter button. while holding the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on'. continue to hold the trip meter button for 10 seconds. step 3the needle jump by default is set to on. once you've held the trip meter button for ten seconds, the lcd will then display 's-OFF', telling you that the needle jump is now turned off. you can now let go of the trip meter button. if pressed again in this mode, you will set the buzzer back to on, 's-ON'.
*note*if the battery or combination meter is disconnected, you will have to follow the procedure again. 10. what are the hidden radio welcome messages on the tC head unit (works with 1st gen scion pioneer head units)?
these are what we call 'easter eggs'. some people consider them silly and that they aren't 'needed', but honestly, have any other car makers out there been as creative as scion with offering stuff like this? no, i didn't think so you pontiac g6 lover! ok, on the standard pioneer head units that are included on every scion (so far), there are some custom, pre-set welcome messages. follow these steps to get the message you want:
welcome message

*note*first, you must be in "secret function mode" before you enter in the following codes. to enter into secret function mode, do the following: with the key turned off, press and hold 'A' on the head unit and turn the key to 'ACC'. you will now be in secret function mode and you have 15 seconds to perform the code of your chose below. PushMyButton
press and hold 'M' 'A' and '2' simutaneously. now turn the key to off.
WhatMovesYou
press and hold 'A' and 'TEXT' simutaneously and turn the key so 'ACC' is off.
Scion=A+B+C
from the AM setting, press and hold "FOLDER UP' and 'SCAN' simultaneously and turn the key so 'ACC' is off.
(Scion In Japanese)
insert cd and set to track number 2, press and hold 'Folder Down' and 'Text' simultaneously and turn the key so 'ACC' is off.
11. how do i customize my own text for the welcome message on the tC head unit?
so you'd like to 'name' your car something ghey like "icdedppl" huh? well, you can! follow these steps:
2nd gen hu (2006+) step 1turn the key to 'ACC' and turn the radio on. now, turn the key off. step 2on the radio, press and hold 'MUTE' and while continuing to hold down 'MUTE', turn the key to 'ACC'. you should now see a horizontal line on the head unit lcd display start to flash. you can now let go of 'MUTE'. step 3within 15 seconds, press and hold 'PRESET 1' and turn the key off. you should now see a flashing cursor with the letter 'A' displayed. step 4now use the 'PRESET 3' and 'PRESET 4' buttons to change to the letters/characters you want to use. when you find the letter/character that you would like to use, press 'PRESET 6' and the cursor will move over to the next position. if you need to delete a character, press 'PRESET 5'. once you have complete your message, press and hold 'PRESET 6' for five seconds to confirm your selection.
*note*there is a 16 character maximum for the welcome message for the 2st gen hu. 1st gen hu (2005) step 1turn the key to 'ACC' and turn the radio on. now, turn the key off. step 2on the radio, press and hold 'A' and while continuing to hold down 'A', turn the key to 'ACC'. you should now see a horizontal line on the head unit lcd display start to flash. you can now let go of 'A'. step 3within 15 seconds, press and hold 'M' and turn the key off. you should now see a flashing cursor with the letter 'A' displayed. step 4now use the '+' and '-' volume keys to change to the letters/characters you want to use. when you find the letter/character that you would like to use, press 'A' and the cursor will move over to the next position. if you need to delete a character, press 'M'. once you have complete your message, press and hold 'A' for five seconds to confirm your selection.
*note*there is a 12 character maximum for the welcome message for the 1st gen hu. 12. what is the wire color diagram for the stock pioneer head unit's wiring harness in the tC?
wire name/description wire color GR (ground) brown ACC (ignition ACC) gray B+ (12V RAD)blue
ANT (antenna amplifier) orange FL+ pink FL- violet FR+ light green FR- blue RL+ brown RL- yellow RR+ red RR- white *note 1* the ground is located behind the instrument/gauge panel *note 2* the tweeters are wired into the front speakers *note 3* +B to ground is always 12V *note 4* 12V from ACC to ground when key is at ACC or ON position13. what are the bulb sizes for the side turn/mirror turn signals?
the side turn/mirror turn signals do not use bulbs. each mirror uses two led's instead. if you want to change these out or change them to a different color, you must take apart your side mirrors and de-solder the default led's and solder in new led's. instructions with a complete walk-through on how to replace these led's can be found here. thanks kaeon!14. i disconnected my battery and now my power windows and power moonroof aren't working properly. what's wrong?
the power window system and power moonroof actually memorize their initial positon and if you disconnect the battery or if you burn out a fuse or disconnect just the right switch connector, they lose their memory and they need to be reset. when this happens, the led's located in the power window switches will blink when you turn on the car, the power windows 'one-touch' feature will no longer work and the power moonroof will not entirely open. you need to to reset them by following these procedures:
resetting the power windows resetting the power moon roof step 1turn the key in the ignition to 'on'. step 1turn the key in the ignition to 'on'. step 2on the driver's side control, push down (do not use 'one-touch' down) the power window switch for the driver's side window and lower the window halfway. step 2keep pressing the sliding roof switch to the close side until the center glass panel is fully closed. step 3pull up (do not use 'one-touch' up) the power window switch until the window closes and hold the switch for *at least* one second. step 3if the switch remains pressed for approximately two more seconds after the panel is fully closed, the sliding roof ECU memorizes the fully closed position. step 4repeat theur tires are inflated to the correct pressure step 2 turn the ignition switch to the ON position. If the low tire pressure warning light comes on, push and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch (in the glove box) until the warning light turns off and then release the switch.
the tire pressure monitor detects any changes in the tire inflation pressure. therefore, it must initialize and store it in its memory if the tires or wheels have been replaced or the tires have been rotated. you can re-initialize the system by following these steps:
step 1 check and make sure that your tires are inflated to the correct pressure step 2 turn the ignition switch to the ON position. If the low tire pressure warning light comes on, push and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch (in the glove box) until the warning light turns off and then release the switch. step 3 now press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch until the low tire pressure warning light blinks three times. step 4initialization is *not* completed until driving at the vehicle speed of 19 mph or over for more than one hour. the tire pressure monitoring starts when initialization is completed.
16. how do i register my new key to my tC?
if you buy a new key off ebay or from your dealer and you want to program the remote key to work with your car, you must program it. this is a very detailed procedure. visit the following link and follow the instructions to add the new key to your car. you can only have a maximum of 4 registered keys: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16563.17. will the newer (2006+) 2nd generation HU work in my 2005 scion tC?
yes it will! the standard wiring harness for the 2005 and 2006 are identical. just pull out your older HU and put in the new one. also, see this thread: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6763918. will my older (2005) 1st generation HU work in my 2006 scion tC?
yes it will! the standard wiring harness for the 2005 and 2006 are identical. also, see this thread: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6763919. where can i find more information regarding the new steering wheel controls/ipod options and if it will work on my 2005 tC?
see this thread: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=67639. as far as getting the 2nd gen HU ipod version to work with an ipod, you will have to wait until toyota/scion or a 3rd party makes an adapter similiar to the TOY03-AUX but for just the ipod meaning this may be an option later on or you may never be able to use it unless you have a 2006. and if you wanted to try and retrofit the 2006 steering wheel to the 2005 and get it to work with the newer HU, it wouldn't be easy. i imagine someone will try it or even do it, but not anytime soon. if/when i see a diy installation of it, i'll post it here.20. can i use my steering wheel controls on my 2006 tC to control an aftermarket HU?
yes, you can! all you need is the PAC SWI-X and it will work on most aftermarket HU's. follow the instructions for the 2005 camry: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-GlwFQDDJUwF/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=118900&I=127SWIX21. what type of fuses does the tC use and where can i find replacements?
the scion tC uses low-profile, mini "blade" fuses. you can see pics and information of them here: http://www.littelfuse.com/cgi-bin/r.cgi/prod_series.html?LFSESSION=jQ5oQJAcFh&SeriesID=156. as far as replacing them, most auto parts stores i have checked do not sell them, however, you can purchase them online from mouser electronics. go to the littlefuse link above, find the fuse part number you need and then plug it in at mouser. most fuses are $0.37 each, but shipping is $6-$7. if you are not buying 5+ fuses from them, go buy them at your local dealership's parts department. they sell them for $1.50 each. and curious where the fuse locations are and what each is rated at and used for? use your tC owner's manual, sections 7 & 8!22. can i add an auxiliary port to my 1st gen (2005 tC) hu unit?
yes you can! see dctennis10's thread here with a complete diy including pics: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6731823. how do i change the "car type" sound setting on my scion radio?
thanks to Limey on the scionlife forums as i was unaware of this one. i remember reading about the "car type" setting, but i assumed it was only on the '05 models and was very confused as this is not listed in my 2006 radio manual (unless i'm completely blind). the "car type" setting further changes your equalizer settings and can significantly change how sound is reproduced from you stock radio. the following procedure works on *all* scion radios to date (and despite what Limey says, i do know it all!!! *wink*):
step 1 power on your radio. step 2 press and hold the ssp button for five seconds. the radio will beep and the screen will show one of three options: tC, xa, xb step 3 if you own a 2006 (2nd gen radio), use your volume knob to adjust the setting. if you own a 1st gen radio, use your volume buttons to adjust the setting. *note*JLTD hooked up a sound anaylyzer to the stock radio to show what each of the sound settings dsp curves looks like. you can see that here: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47377

that is called a "j-hook" or tow hook and it's used for towing and securing the car while in transit.8. the 3rd/led brake light only lights up in the middle while braking. is this normal?
yes, this is normal and not a defect. it's not known *why* scion made it this way, but that's just how it is. if you're interested in "extending" the brake light length, see this thread for the info: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=63336.

no. however, there is a place for one behind the glove box. you can find a tutorial here or here on how to get to the air filter box to install one. if you would like to order the official scion air filter, order part # 88568-52010 from your dealer. or if you prefer to cut your own air filter, the approximate air filter dimension is 195 x 215 mm.
f. engine and performance questions
1. when i accelerate, i hear a whistle noise coming from the tC engine. is this normal?
yes, this is completely normal. this is the sound of air as it makes its way through the air intake/throttle body in your engine as you accelerate. it makes more of a whistle/high pitched sound than most cars because of how the stock intack/throttle body was designed. it's speculated that scion designed them like this on purpose to try and replicate the sound of what a cai (cold air intake) makes when accelerating.2. when will the trd supercharger for the tC be offically released?
*update* the trd supercharger for the tC has now officially been released! cost is $3,200. scion part # is 00602-51005-01. info/specs on the supercharger can be found here: scion press release; trd/scion brochure; trd website info3. what is the 0-60 time for the stock tC?
there is no official 0-60 time listed for the stock scion tC on scion's website. many reviewers have tested the car and the speeds for 0-60 come out between 7.4-7.8 seconds. quarter mile is tested to be around 15.7 seconds @ 88mph. this is on the 5-speed, manual transmission model.4. what is the scion tC oil filter part number?
the oem part number for the standard oil filter is 90915-10004. the trd performance oil filter for the tC is 00602-90915-006. also, the camry filter *will* fit, however, it is much smaller and will not be able to filter as much oil as the the correct tC part.

ok, i started listing all the silly little facts that i found in the owner's manual, new car feature doc, etc, but there are just *too* many for me to type. there are a few good links i've found, so i've placed those below first, and then i've added a few of my own. thanks to all the forum users @ scionlife.com (especially Otocan and cad455), clubsctiontc.com and yoursciontc.com for helping contribute:
some existing faq/info/fact sites:
- http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35024 - lots of very detailed info on the tC.
- http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35013 - lots of information taken from the owner's manual in an 'easy-to-read' format.
- http://www.clubsciontc.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1709 - some good, generic info on the tC.
- http://www.yoursciontc.com/information.html - some good tC info including some technical help on more advanced mods.
my own facts (if i repeated any, please let me know):
- the vehicle VIN is stored in the ECM.
- all combination meter illumintation is provided with led's to reduce the consumtion electrical energy.
- there is a fuel lid mark next to the gas pic in the combination meter that points to the side that the fuel lid is on.
- the tC includes 'one-touch' up and down power windows for both the driver and passenger windows.
- if there is a malfuntion or a battery discharge and you need to open the rear hatch, there is an via the emergency lever in the back door lock assembly.
- the total number of wireless recognition codes that can be retained for the tC is four.
- there is an occupent detection sensor in the passenger seat that is used for airbag deployment and seatbelt notification.
- the defogger has a timer and is automatically turned off after 15 minutes of use.
- the tC has both front and rear spats near the wheels to help diflect airflow around the wheels and increase aerodynamics.
- the automatic transmission on the tC has an engine torque control unit that retards the engine ignition timing temporarily to improve shift feeling during up or down shifting.
- when shifting from 'Neutral' to 'Drive' on the automatic transmission for the tC, the gear is first temporarily shifted to 2nd gear and then to 1st gear to reduce vehicle 'squating'.
